Reviews of the Best Reflex Hammers

#1.  MDF Tromner Neurological Reflex Hammer

Tromner is one of the best reflex hammer used by medical professionals. The hammer has all the features you would need and provides incredible value.

Made by MDF Instruments, a well-respected company that also makes stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, and other medical equipment, the Tromner reflex hammer can be used both on pediatric and adult patients. The hammer is designed to cause myotatic and cutaneous responses.

There are two mallets on the head of the MDF reflex hammer. One of the heads is small while the other one is large and both are made of soft silicone. Therefore, you can be sure that your patient will not feel pain when you tap their tendons. Moreover, you can use either of the heads to get precise tendon sounds.

The handle of the reflex hammer is lightweight and well-balanced with the head. There is also an in-built brush that can be used to cause cutaneous responses.

Generally, the Tromner is the best reflex hammer both for its features and price.

#2.  Taylor Reflex Hammer Kit – [Best Reflex Hammer for Medical Students]

The Taylor Tactical Black reflex hammer is accurate and has a wide range of features that make it one of the best reflex hammers for medical students. The stainless steel hammer comes in a kit with 5 pieces of essential gear for nurses. The kit includes the hammer, a tuning fork, bandage scissors, and a penlight. The kit is also affordable.

We love the Taylor reflex hammer kit for the additions of the tuning fork and penlight. Moreover, the price of the 5 hammers is affordable for students.

#3.  MDF Babinski 2.0 Reflex Hammer – [Best Reflex Hammer for Doctors]

The MDF Babinski Reflex Hammer has a modern design and features a spring-loaded system that keeps the locks the articulating head in place. The head is weighted for controlled striking and is held over a chrome-plated brass disc.

We love the MDF reflex hammer because it can be used in both perpendicular and parallel positions to the shaft. Therefore, you will have greater flexibility when using the hammer to tap various parts of the body.

The telescoping handle of the reflex hammer is also nicely tough. Just like is the case with the Tromner reflex hammer, the Babinski has a brush at the base of the handle. You can remove the brush to elicit cutaneous responses.

The Babinski is the best reflex hammer for nurses, nursing students, and doctors. The hammer’s feature makes it precise, and the stainless steel material ensures its durability. However, the price of the hammer is a little bit high.

The MDF Taylor neurological reflex hammer is an excellent medical tool for percussing the abdomen and gaining the chest sounds. The well-designed reflex hammer has a decent weight, is made of high-quality materials, and works great.

#5.  US Neurological Pediatric Reflex Hammer

The US Neurological reflex hammer is not widely used as the devices we have reviewed above. However, it is the best reflex hammer for infants. The head of the pediatric reflex hammer is small and the weight light so that it can be used on babies.

If you are a pediatric nurse, this is the reflex hammer you would need to use on infants. However, if you are dealing with young children and adolescents, you can use any of the above adult reflex hammers but just reduce the tapping slightly to get the sounds you need.

#6.  MDF Queen Square Reflex Hammer

The final device on your reflex hammer review is the MDF Queen Square reflex hammer. The Queen Square is easy to use and has a blunted tip and soft bumper for patient comfort. The hammer’s grip is also removable and its flexible handle will help you tap more accurately on any parts of the body you want to elicit a response.

The softer bumper of the reflex hammer is great an inducing myotatic response. The hammer’s handle is made of a plastic nylon and has a tapered point, which is useful when you are trying to elicit reflexes on the abdomen or plantar areas.

The Queen Square is not as flexible as the Babinski or Tromner but is a good option if you are looking for a value reflex hammer.

Editor’s Verdict: Best Reflex Hammer

From our reflex hammer review above, it’s clear that quality, usability, and price are important factors to consider before buying a reflex hammer. All the reflex hammers in our list are excellent options for students, nurses, and other medical professionals.

However, we especially love the MDF Babinski. This reflex hammer provides more flexibility when tapping different parts of the body as it can be used in both perpendicular and parallel positions to the shaft.

Our second-best option would be the MDF Tromner for its excellent build, ability to be used for both pediatric and adult patients, and quite affordable price.
